The afternoon dip is real, but the answer is not always to push harder.

By mid-afternoon, many workdays have already included hours of screens, decisions, meetings and sitting. When concentration starts to fade, another ten minutes of scrolling at your desk rarely feels like a genuine break.

Actually leave the screen.

A useful break creates a change of context. Stand up. Walk to refill your water. Step outside for a few minutes. Look at something further away than your laptop. Even a short physical reset can make the break feel different from simply switching browser tabs.

Check the basics.

Sometimes the slump is simply a reminder that you have been busy enough to overlook ordinary needs. Have you had water? Did you eat lunch? Have you moved at all? A drink, some fruit or a sensible snack may be more useful than automatically reaching for another caffeine hit.

Give your mind a clean pause.

Try not to fill every spare minute with messages and social media. A few quiet minutes can help create a boundary between one block of work and the next. If possible, decide what you will return to before you take the break so you do not come back wondering where to start.

Make the break easy to repeat.

You do not need a wellness room or a thirty-minute ritual. Ten intentional minutes can be enough. The point is to interrupt the pattern of sitting, staring and pushing through. A better afternoon break should help you return to the day feeling refreshed—not guilty for stepping away.
